Process Water

Process Water and Industrial Water

Process Water is loosely described as water used in industry such as manufacturing, chemical processing, paper production, cooling towers and power generation as well as oil and gas production. Because of the broad nature of the application, testing required in each sub-sector is also known to vary widely. Regular water testing is an important process as it can help to verify the safety of the procedure and optimise the industrial process, both from a cost and operational standpoint.

Water plays a critical role in many manufacturing and industrial environments. Used in almost every part of the process, it commonly required for the manufacture of a product or used for cooling equipment. By optimising your water quality, you can help improve your product quality and process efficiency.

Water conservation in industrial processes
Water conservation is a key challenge for many businesses, with more companies trying to improve water usage and water waste in their manufacturing processes. With an effective test solution, both water and chemical usage can be reduced, improving both the cost efficiency and environmental impact.

Cooling towers
Cooling towers are used to remove heat from a building, facility or machine. Commonly used in large buildings for heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC), industrial cooling towers are much larger and used in a variety of manufacturing and process industries. Chemical disinfection is critical for the system to avoid microbiological contamination. Without effective treatment contamination can develop and block the airflow of the system, causing it to fail. One of the major concerns for cooling towers is an outbreak of legionella. Legionella thrives in warm water, but many disinfection treatments are ineffective at higher temperatures which can often lead to overdosing of the system to compensate. Regular testing throughout the process can ensure that disinfection levels are effective at preventing bacterial, fungal or algae growth, as well as avoiding a legionnaires outbreak. With effective disinfection monitoring, chemical usage can be optimised to avoid outbreaks and limit the expense of chemical overdosing.

Oil and gas production
Water plays an important role in oil and gas production, and in particular in hydraulic fracturing. The process of fracking involves injecting a large amount of water, sand and chemicals down the well. This water can come from multiple sources and is often mixed with chemical treatment to help prevent bacterial growth and protect the integrity of the well. To limit cost increases and ensure that these chemicals are used efficiently, regular testing should be performed on the water.  In addition to testing the process water from oil and gas production, offshore facilities will also require water testing for drinking water facilities to ensure it is effectively disinfected.

Innovaprep's Rapid Concentration of SARS-CoV-2 in Wastewater for Public Health Outbreak Mitigation

Researchers around the globe have already begun to use wastewater to detect the emergence and spread of COVID-19 outbreaks. This approach may prove to be a powerful epidemiological method to help Public Health officials mobilize resources and help determine the degree and duration of intervention needed in a community.

This application requires that target organisms are detectable at very low concentrations from about 10 copies per 100 milliliters of influent. Rapid methods are only capable of analyzing very small volumes; generally 10 microliters or less. The InnovaPrep concentration technology can bridge this gap faster, easier, and better than common methods.

Our customers have confirmed that The CP Select can rapidly and efficiently concentrate SARS-CoV-2 from raw influent wastewater samples. Detecting SARS-CoV-2 in wastewater is difficult because it is so dilute, making rapid and easy concentration key to rapid detection. InnovaPrep tools can provide the exponential concentration factors required and can be easily integrated with routine methods used for all waterborne pathogens normally surveilled, while saving labor costs and improving workflow.

User data show that the InnovaPrep CP Select outperformed HA, PEG, and Celite based methods for the concentration of six viruses from 100 mL of raw influent. As shown in the below table represented by the red bar (IP).

Further, the speed of concentration and the ease of use easily beat traditional methods.

For secondary clarifier effluent, similar results were reported, and the InnovaPrep Large Volume Concentrator was used to process 50-100 L, tremendously improving the detection limit for those viruses.

  1. Kemio™ Heavy Metals in Water Utilities

Kemio™ Heavy Metals Protect against lead and cadmium contamination to ensure safe drinking water.

      • EPA approved method for lead testing The US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has approved Palintest Method 1001, Rev. 1.1. for the determination of total recoverable lead in drinking water using differential pulse anodic stripping voltammetry using pre-calibrated disposable sensors in a Palintest Kemio device. The publication of Palintest’s alternative testing method in the Federal Register makes this analytical method legally available as an option for meeting EPA’s monitoring requirements in determining compliance with national primary drinking water regulations within The Safe Drinking Water Act.

Turbidity Testing in Water Utilities

Turbidity is a measure of how cloudy water is, it is often used to measure the sanitary quality of water and can be used as an indicator of filters not working effectively. Find out more about turbidity in different applications.

Palintest offers a number of solutions for turbidity testing, all of which are suitable for different users. Turbidity tubes are used for a quick and approximate indication of turbidity. For a more advanced test the Turbimeter Plus can be used. It uses unique Quadoptix Technology allowing multiple validations of results for greater accuracy. The Turbimeter Plus is also available as part of the Turbidity and Ammonia Combined Kit or Turbidity and Chlorine Combined Kit. These kits are ideal for service professionals and have been designed for field use.

Depending on your application or regulatory needs, we offer a wide range of solutions to suit your application.

Testing For Ammonia in Water Utilities

Ammonia needs to be monitored in drinking water to safeguard human health.

Ammonia is naturally found in water, as it is produced through the decay of organic matter as well as by humans through the production of fertilisers, plastics, pharmaceuticals, and petrochemicals. When ammonia (NH3) is dissolved in water, some of the ammonia molecules will gain a hydrogen ion and this positively charged species is called ammonium (NH4+). The ratio of NH3 to NH4+ is dependent on the pH and temperature of the water. The lower the pH and the warmer the water; the higher the concentration of ammonium due to the increase of H+ ions. Ammonia at low concentrations is mostly harmless to humans, however, it is an irritant to the eyes and nose. The taste and odour of the water can be affected by the presence of ammonia.

Ammonia is toxic to aquatic life and has been reportedly toxic at levels as low as 0.5 mg/L. High ammonia levels in natural waters can result in an excess of algae growth, which prevents sunlight from reaching the aquatic life and plants eventually causing death.

In drinking water, ammonia needs to be monitored to safeguard human health. It may be present after disinfection using monochloramines, or because of leaching from materials used in the pipework construction. Chlorine is known to react with ammonia and therefore decreased disinfection efficiency can be expected if the drinking water contains more than 0.2 mg/L of ammonia.

Palintest's Lumiso Expert is a multiparameter photometer including over 75 tests for chemical parameters including ammonia tests using both the Indophenol and Nessler methods, meaning there is a test to suit all ammonia monitoring needs. The Lumiso Expert also offers tests for chloramines, which form when ammonia reacts with chlorine, as well as many other useful water quality monitoring parameters.
